This is another fairly easy project to do, it only took me an hour and I was in no rush, so it should take you much shorter to do. The first thing you need to do is unlock your doors if you can, as well as have your windows up. The first goal of this project is to take of the inside panel on the door off, and to accomplish this the first thing you need to do is take off the window handle. Using the window handle puller shown in the tools section, what you are looking to do is remove the C-clip that is behind the door handle. On the C-clip, the tool needs to push the ends of the C and not the circular part of the C. The tool pushes the C clip off the window handle, and allows it to be removed from the bar that is holding it on. A little tip that I noticed when doing this: you need to put your free hand to cover the side of the window handle that you are not pushing with the tool, as the C-clip can pop out and you may lose it like I almost did. The following picture illustrates exactly what you need to be doing: (As always, clicking on most pictures will bring up a much bigger version for better clarity.)

The C-clip’s position: C-clip position

After the C-clip is removed, then the window handle should be easily pulled off. Next, remove the door lock indicator – the little stem up by the window that is up when your doors are unlocked and down if they are locked – by unscrewing it (remember lefty-loosy). Now it is time to remove the last of the screws that are holding the door panel in. There are 4 screws total, one on the door handle tray, and three on the arm rest. There will be a picture which shows the exact location of these below. After all of these parts are removed, it is time to get the door panel off. The door panel is held on by plastic screws and small clips so the way I took off the panel is by starting on one of the lower corners and used some muscle to pull the panel from the actual door, slowly working around the whole panel in order to not break anything. Once you get the panel off the door it will look as pictured below.

Now that the door panel is off, it is time to get to the dirty part. You have to work your hand up to the lock cylinder back in order to pull off the bracket that is holding the door lock cylinder in. There is a small lip on the big bracket that is perfect to grab with needle nose pliers and pull the clip out from holding the lock cylinder in. It may take a little maneuvering because if you have short or thick arms, you will have to find a awkward comfortable position. You can see the big bracket that holds the lock cylinder in up top in the ‘parts involved’ section. Once this bracket is pulled out the lock cylinder should easily pull out (from the inside out, don’t try to pull the cylinder in from the inside of the door). Once the lock cylinder is out of the car, there is a tiny bracket on the back of the cylinder that will need to be removed so that the piece that connects the cylinder to the lock indicator stem can be removed. There should be two little tabs that pop up for easy grabbing as well as a really small tab in the center that needs to be pulled up so the small bracket can be removed. A picture follows:

Back of the lock cylinder: Lock cylinder back

Now once the big part is taken off, it is time to take the brand new lock cylinders and build it just like the old one was assembled. In other words, take the main lock cylinder and put the rubber gasket on it, then put the big piece that just came off the old cylinder, then put on the little bracket that held it onto the old one (except use the new part, not the old one). Now it is time to reattach the lock cylinder into the car. Start by putting the entire lock cylinder assembly into the hole it came out of, and what you are trying to do is to connect the big metal piece with the slit into the proper spot it came out of. I am really at a loss for words as to how this is supposed to look, so I got a good picture of it – and as they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

Lock connection made: Lock connected

After this is connected, it is time to take the large bracket and put it back in so it holds the cylinder tight against the door panel. Once this is done the lock cylinder should be tested by unlocking and locking the door with the new cylinder. If everything tests out alright, congratulations, if it doesn’t shoot me an email or something with a question or go over to Trans Am Country and join up with the great group of guys who I am learning from in the forums. The installation of everything else is the reverse of taking it off. There is no real finished product pictures as it is just the door lock, and its kind of boring, but normally these guides do include finished products.
